About This Site

I keep thinking I want a blog. In reality, I want to feel like I felt in 1996, writing HTML in a text editor and uploading it to my local ISP with Fetch. To that end, I decided to create this site from scratch. No frameworks, no static site generators, no AI.

The site is built with HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. I did use some JavaScript (thanks to Astro, the SSG I took for a spin and almost decided to use) for the light/dark toggle, but plan to change that as soon as I write one myself. I am hand-coding it in VS Code; from 1997-2006 I would have been using HomeSite, but I have to make some concessions to modernity. I also develop on a local server now, and then upload it to my shared hosting site, instead of developing right on the server, like I used to.

(Although I am actually writing this on the server, because sometimes it's just quicker.)

The Badges

If you'd like to take my silly 90s-style images, feel free. You don't have to attribute them or anything. I'll keep them on this page for the foreseeable future. Just right-click and use "Save Image," then upload them wherever you want, like it's 1996 and the internet is still the frontier. Yee haw!

  1. An eye-searing bright green rectangle, 88x31 pixels, with a red border. Blue letters say FRAMEWORK FREE.
  2. A grey beveled rectangle, 88x31 pixels, with the letters AI and a red circle and line over them.
  3. A terrible bright cyan rectangle, 88x31 pixels, with the text Made by A HUMAN
  4. A light purple rectangle with the text THE FUTURE IS FEDERATED
  5. A garish rainbow-striped rectangle with the text 'Love is Love' in a classic 90s script font

Bonus: they're all done in web-safe colors! Remember those?
